Now, having a suspicion in my mind that the hon. member was going to raise the question I put down few figures. Here you pay for your cigars a tax of $2.50, if you are a wealthy person, and $50 if you are not. In England you pay 15s. 7d. without regard to the quality. On cigarettes you pay here according to your taste $1 down to 30 cents in England you pay 125, 7d. On tobacco Its. 102. for Cavandish, 10s. 41⁄2d, for other kinds, and for snuff 11s. 101⁄2d Here you pay. anything between 30 cents. and $1.50. I have not tried to work out the figures of wine because the systems are so different. I have not yet found anybody who could compare them accurately. The hon. member reminds us that Sir Claud Severn promised to consider the reduction of taxation on light wines. We considered the ques tion and we came to the conclu- sion, based on sufficient informa- tion, that they were not too high and the taxation appears to be having no deleterious effect. The most interesting comparison is that the case of irits which, I suppose, is of importance in this country. We pay on spirits $6 per gallon and on liquors $10

a gallon. They charge on spirits in England £5.10s. 5d. I think in view of these figures it a little difficult to argue that our duties are abnormally high, and I question whether, if they were reduced, the prices would go down. I did not say I questioned whether it was desirable they should. The rates seem exceedingly reasonable for any person who contents him- self with a moderate amount of alcoholic refreshments, but the important point, to my mind, is this: I apologise for referring once more to the opium revenus and my remarks are not intended to come under the category which the hon. member described as "hypocritical gush," but I still believe that the revenue from opium will cease within a measurable period. I confess that I think that the period may be longer than some of us hoped it would be, but at least it will not be # permanent source of revenue. I suggest to the hon. member that must end within ten years.
