ANNOUNCEMENT.

WING to the receipt of aumerous complaints from patrons as to the incivility of various members of the Staff of the flotels under the Management of this Company in Hongkong, auch complainte being to the effect that "Cash has been demanded in satisfaction of Liquors supplied, and patrons thereby inconvasioned by not being allowed to sign "chita," we beg to draw the attention of our clientela to the terms of the liquors Ordinance, 1917, an extract from which is horoby given :-

2. In this Ordinance.

(a)"Cash" menus any coins or notes current in the Colony, (b) Sale" includes any transaction in which intoxicating liquor is supplied for any consideration whatsoever, direct or indirect.

3. (1) Subject to the provisions of subsection (2) of this section, 17 person shall sell any intoxicating liquor for consumption on or at any licensed promises except for cash.

(2) Subsection (1) of this section shall not apply to the following:- (a) any sale by the proprietor of an hotel to a person residing at

tho hotel:

(any sale by the proprietor of an hotel of liquor to be consumed

in the dining room of the hotel at ma of the regular moale of the hotel or of liquor to be consumed in conjunction with any other bona fide nient for which a charge of at least thirty conte can be reasonably made :

(c) any sale in accordance with the candi ions of his iconce by

the bobler of a restaurant adjunct licenes.

1. Where any intoxicating liquor is sold by a servant or employee in contravention of section 3 of this Ordinance the employer, whether a naturai parson or a holy corporate, shall be deemed to be guilty of an offence against this Ordinanze unless he proves affirmatively that the sale was against his express orders and without his consont or connivanco.

5. Every person to whom any liquor is, to the knowledge of such person, supplied in contravention of this Ordin- ance shall also be guilty of an offence against this Ordinance.

The co-operation of my Patrons, with a view to assisting us to carry out the provisions of the liquors Ordinance, is respectfully requested.

Mrs. Madelin Wachendorff, Gomer Berry, and Sir W. E. Three hoys being missing, the police dragged the Grand Surrey Canal, and found the bodies of Jimmy Gibbs and Sydney New- man, 5% and 42 years respective ly, with that of another boy, H. Andraws, address unknown, aged about 10. It is presumed that the lastenamed was drowned in at tempting to rescue the other two.

In the lumber rooms of the Akademie Galerie at Vienna the director, Dr. Eigenberger, has just discovered eight important pictures by old masters. Five are by Rubens and the others by Van Dyck, Jan Steen, and Philip Wouverman. The total value of the finds is estimated at several lundred million crowns.

At the Hydepark and Polmadie Works of the North British Locomotive Compiny, Glasgow, notices were posted intimating that the Fair holidays have been extended to three weeks. Owing to slack trad: only about half the usual number of men are employ- ed. The same Company's Atlas Works were closed down some time ago.

It is stated that a syndicate has secured à concession from the Greek Government giving them permission to search for the re- covery of treasure sunk in the con- bined Turkish and Egyptian fleets at the battle of Navarino in 1827 by the British, French, and Russian Flect. The last treasure is estimated at about £9,000,000.

A new musical prodigy has been discovered in the person of a boy of 4 years named Pietro Mazzini, who is attracting enormous atten- tion in musical circles in Paris. It is told of the child that when only two years of age he was able to sing Dalian operatic airs quite correctly, He began to play on the piano in November, and has an extensive repertoire.

News was received by Sir John Brickwool in Landon that his daughter. Mrs. Madeline Mary Forest- Wachendorff, wife of Master Franz Wachendorff, and her eleven-year-old son, Hotis, were drowned while bathing ju the River Elhe, which runs past their home in Germany. The deceased woman was aged 41.

"I am sorry it is not in my power to order you both to be flogged," said Alderman Sir Charles Johnston at the Guildhall when sentencing George Bilson, coal merchant, of Bournemouth-road Peckham, S.E.. to a month's imprisonment, and William Ernest Dent, carman to 14 days, for cruelty to a cob by work- ing it while it was lame and unfit for work.

The Secretary to the Overseas Trade Depart nent (Lt-Col. Buck- ley), in reply to a question in the House of Commons said formal (confirmation has been given to the rates submitted by the Forth Pilot- age Authority on the understand- ing that it will be open to the pilots to make further representa- tions at the end of six months from the date of confirmation.

Mr. Bruce, the Commonweath || Prime Minister, speaking at Mel- bourne at a commercial travellers' dinner, said that he intended, after the Imperial Conference, to visit the great 'cities in every part of the British Isles to stir Britain's emigrators about the possibilitles of Australia for the absorption of British immigrants and as a mar- ket for products of the Motherland.

As a result of the experience gained in connection with the 17 automatic telephone exchanges already in operation in England, it has been decided by, the posta! authorities to develop the tele- phone system largely in the future by nlant of a similar nature. Specifications are being prepared for an automatic telephone exchange at Kirkcaldy along with many others in various parts of Great Britain.
