HONGKONG NOTES AND COMMENT.
– KË
LOCAL METALS,
An instance of the demoralised state of the metals market and the utter impossibility to do business can be gathered from the following: At the present rate of exchange. importers are asking about $6 per picut for square... bars, standard assortment. From one quarter to- day an offer to sell has been made at $4.90 per picul and as for as is known, this has not been accepted.
CANNED GOODS. Business in canned goods and provisions has also shrunk although shipments are being made to the usual coast ports. Asparagus has been going up in price and there is an upward tendency to report in the prices of preserves, the latter being due to the rise in price of sugar reported some months ago. On the whole, prices should be steady with inducement to buy but with exchange dropping dealers are reluctant to make firm offers in sterling and gold currency. The fall in exchange should, under normal conditions, send prices up.
