SWIFT. 1730. was sold at Rugby, by auction for £13. The glass was originally taken from the old Four Crosses Inn, Willoughby, on the London road. The story goes that the Dean was accustomed to stop at the ian, then called the Three Crosses, on his way to and from his deanery in Ireland On one occasion it hap pened that the innkeeper's wife was too occupied to pay the atten- tion she was wont to his commands, and tomark his displeasure at some hasty observation of hers he wrote the couplet in the casement window with his diamond ring. The name of the inn was afterwards changed to the Four Crosses, by which it is now known.
