CORRESPONDENCE
WAR MEMORIAL QUERY.
[To the Editor of the "China_Mall."}
Sir, I hope I was not the only one surprised and disappointed to find that Sir Paul Chator, in his speech on Monday at the War Memorial subscribers meeting, made no reference to the provision of free treatment for ex-servidumán. Who Mr. H. W. Bird brought this point up at a previous meating the answer given by Mr. D. G. M. Bernard, who was acting as Chair- ruan in Sir Paul's abeonca, was, if I remember rightly, that "the sug gestion would receive sympathetic consideration."
Are we to take it that, as thò sübu jeet wes, not mentioned in Sir Paul's speech, the suggestion las received sympathetic considera- tion" and has been definitely, turn- ed down? One scarcely likes to think that men who owe so much to the returned ex-active service Iman as do the majority of those on the War Memorial Committee could have done this and, for my part, I. prefer the mare charitable assump |tion that with the waning of the war glamour the claims of those who once were hailed as "heroes" have been overlooked. Perhaps it is not too late even now to remedy the oversight.
