THE GYMKHANA,
SATURDAY AFTERNOON'S
SPORT.
DIG SURPRISES AND RU DIVIDENDS,
io
Whatever else there may have been groure about in regards to Satur day's Gymkhana it is certain that no fault could possibly be found with the weather. It was a delightfully fresh, sunshiny afternoon and the hills around were looking their greeneat. The crowd was a fairly big one. H.E. the Acting Governor was there with a party and some of the Manila Polo players cania along.
On Saturday the public got its first opportunity to Ben the alterations which the Jockey Club people hav been making during this last month OF two. The pari-mutuel, which used to be under the mem- ber'e stand, bas changed places with the stable and car. be reached in ive minutes bir so brisk walking from the winning post. There did not seem to be very much more elbow.room around the ticket windows and thei chief result seemed to be that the crowd; instead of being concentrated, A formerly, in front of the pab'ic- stand, was distributed along the strip of lawn further to the East.

Another innovation on Saturday wan the r. oval of the main entrance to the narrow bit of road. bebind the sinods. The old position at the Weels extremity of the enclosure, where there was 2 fairly wide approach, was much more convenient. This the Jockey Club will prob sly find when the big meetings

17.613 gate is awkwardly 181 lb...(Mr. T. W. Doyle) 2 situated; as an exit its position in Mr. Towers Mosaic Tile, 151 lbs. absurd and dangerous. It is known of cours that the Jockey Club is making a member's enclosure which will hold a

pari-mutuel. That project, it is evident, will only be carried out: by sacrificing the comfort and Convenience of the general public to whose support the Jockey Club is in ebted for its continued existence.
As to the racing on Saturday, it Juruished several earprises. Remedios had bundle of jose, winning the first race on Dandy Kid," and, to the amazement of everyone, bringing Dr. Kew's" Wombat "home first in the Gymkhana Stakes. "Dandy Kid's " victory was worth $95.40 to his backers and "Wombat'e' win (he was a rank outsider) brought in the record return for the day--$104.30. Always a good investment i ron chance to spot the winner, the ball ⚫ and bucket race was won by Com
mander Crocker whose supporters got $136.40 each. Seth's win on "Scamperdale" in the Class Handi- cap also proved a bit of surprite; it returned a dividend of $32.50,

The Gymkhana Stakes provided a good race. There was a field of six, with Hongkong Chief (Spink) and Hatta (Doyle) both warm 1avourites. Nastran (Seth) tock the lead and held it for most of the way. Up the straight Wombat came cut to the front and was way challenged by Flatt n and Mosaic Tile -(Matcham). Nastaran and Hongkong! Chief had dropped out of the race.
