WALPOLE ISLAND.
EVIDENCE OF BEING SIX
TIMES SUBMERGED.
J
A description of what is believed
to be one of the most peculiar islanda in the world and one of the lonelie t
the spots in
Pacifo Walpole island, which has been submerged by the ocean at least six times from all indication, is given by A.C F. Mackay, representative of the Austral Guano company on the island, saye a Sydney despatch.
Walpole is about 150 miles cast by south of Noumea and contains great deposits of guanɔ. With Surprise I-land and the Chesterfield group, it is leased by the Austral concern. It is a limestone table, 230 fret above the ocean, accessible at only one epot, at a break in the cliffs where steps bave been cut.
Mackay raid there were remarkably clear indications on the clifle of suc. ces-ive water levels, and that pumice, coral and other shells on this curiously raised platform showed tat at least six times it must have been at or under sea level.
TRACES OF HUMAN HABITATION,
Many traces of ancient human babitation were found in the form of walls obviously built by man, columns of coral eight and nine feet high, large tomba and clamshell bladed instru- mente, several specimens of which Mackay has presented to the Austra- lien museum.
Fresh water supplies were discover- ed in two caves. Mackay expresand the opinion that formerly there was a much great.r land surface than ab present.
"I found undoubted signs of pre- historic habitation," he said, "I also found in places, where the guano menta on to the coral, the remaİNE of the horned turtle which I am in- formed have been found nowhere else except in South America and Lord Howo island."
Mackay aid that probably the former inhabitants had escaped in boa's when the coesn rose and eum- mrged the island, or that they bad been drowned in the rising tide. The present population of the island con- aists of a white men, 30 Japanese aod about 100 Loyalty islanders. Poultry and goats are raised for food, while vegatable and fruits grow lux- uriantly, tomatoes growing as large as 21 Jonnde in weight. Cricket ond fishing are the main diversions of the residents.
On Sunday the Loyalty islanders hold two church services, which the whole population attende, he said.
