LATER.
The President urged immediate legis lation to establish a temporary national coal agenes purchase and distributa coal, also legislation which would make the Railroad Labour Board decisious binding on both parties.
President
Harding declared that neither the limited number controlling the railways, par the large numbers working them, should be permitted to imperial public welfare. At the present juncture be would not recommend legis lation dealing with the railroad strike, but the Government was resolved to exert its power, maintain transportation and uphold the men's right to work.
YORK, August 18th. The Hailway
xecutives have arranged to meet again and consider the plan_sub- mitted by the mediating Railway Brotherhoods regarding fatura employ- ment conditions, the disagreement on which is standing in the way of a settle ment.
HALIFAX, August 19th.
A provisional police force has been organised to protect the pumpmen in mines in the Glace Bay, New Waterford, ¡Dominion and South Cape Breton areas, where the mines are flooding and exten sive damage is being caused from the accumulation of gas and water
It is expected that it will be impossible to re- open some of these mines.
WASHINGTON, August 20th

INDIGNATION IN INDIA
BOMBAY, August 19th, All shades of Indian political opinion are agitated over Mr. Lloyd George's speech regarding Indian Administration which is being made the rallying point in an attempt to unite the extremists and mole. rates. Unofficial members of the various legislatures are giving angry interviews to the Press and tabling resolutions of condemnation in the legislatures.
An influential deputation, comprising members of the State Council waited on the Viceroy (Earl Reading) and declared the peoch conflicts with previous official assur Anees and is a negation of the basio prin. ciple on which promises for the ultimato grunting of dominion status were based.
The Viceroy replied that the Premier bad authorised him to state that the speech waa-innowise intended to indicate a departure from the policy announced in carlier official declarations; he merely desired to warn them against the policy of wrecking by the non cooperators at the next elections.
NEW MILITARY POLICY ON INDIAN BRONTIER,
BIMA, August 18th. Vice-Marshal Sir John M. Salmond, interviewed by Reutor's regarding his receu visit to the north-west frontier, foreshadowed a more effective and economic mothad of dealing with rocalcitrant tribes He declared that India would shortly be equipped with seventy-five aeroplanes and ho thought that with a hundred active machives, better work could be accom. plished than the whole of the military forces had been able to do during the past sixty or seventy years.
