VESSEL ON FIRE.

FIFTH IN THREE WEEKS AT CALCUTTA,

The Rith case of a fire on board a aressed in the port of Calcutta pocured

Tuesday night, says the Calcata Englishman of March 30, when the American and Indian "line stammer "Poleric" was found on fire at No 3 berth in the Kidderpart Docks AL peculiar feature which has been noticed i a previous cases, cheerves our on- temporary, is that fe outbreak oc- arred actually when the vesel was in the point of leaving. She was due to leave her moorings exactly aber midnight on Tuesday and the fire was noticed at about 10.33 pan, on Tues- day. The "first sign of an outbreak was the appearance of onske Evrough the ventilators of holds number 7 and B sinuated near the Fracastic. These bolds contained a large quantity of cargo consisting almost exclusively of tute. No delay took place in getting

work the fire applianes provided as the docks, and in summoning the fire Four Pilot and the fire brigade. By

£ o'clock three engines including the fre-Boat were hand ei work on the folds from which dense volumes of smoke were issuing. Luckily the fire was kept between ships although a strong southerly breeze was helping ro spread the Barnes forward. By mid- night the outbreak appeared to be well under control it having been possible for sume of the firemen to descend ánto the holds, and it was expected that the flames would he extinguished by early morning. The" Kutsang "| moored just north of the Poleric “* | was never in any serious danger. especially as the flames did not break But above the decks.

There were no passengers an haned as the "Poleric" is said to be only a cargo boat, although she has a tonnage of 6243. The American and Indian line vessels runs on a direct service on Bos ton, New York and Philadelphia, via Colombo. The cause of the outbreak is unknown, but incendiarism is again strongly suspected.

Previous outbreaks are recorded be Now:-
