LORD NORTHCLIFFE'S VIEWS.
HISTORY REPEATING TESELF?
LONDON, May 10.
The Empire Press Union, under the providency of Lord Burnham, gave a luncheon to Lord Northclife on bis return fra: bis world tour. A distinguished com pany included the American Ambassador.
Lord Burnham, in welcoming Lord North described him as the first and foremost journalist whoj believe in the newspaper press as a great force for universal goodwill and weliare.
·
Lord North life, responding, dwelt largely on the Canadian cattle embargo which had recently been the Ezbject of much agitation in England. Lord North- cliffe regarded the embargo as a great slur on the people i of Canada and pointed oat that during the war the Minister of Agriculture promised removal of the em- bargo. Lord Northclife insisted on fulfilment of that pledge, He said Britain's position in the world depend ed not so much on cleverness as the fact that the national word of Englishmen was held in high esteem abroad, especially in the Dominions.
IMPROVED COMMUNICATIONS WANTED. Lord Northcliffe point d out that the loss of the American coloules started with small beginnings. He rejoiced that he had not joined the Government when requested in 1911, if ouit 15x, ke should not like to regarded as one of those responsible for beginning the break up of the British Empire by losing the praising provinces of Canada. He continued that the Dominions were generally Ettle inrested in British, politicians but were warm barted in their af- tion and respect for the Crown. Nob dy imagined for a single minute that co servative people in a wanted a republic. They loved the signs of authority. The real link which held together the work accomplished in India by scores of generaticas of Britons was the Crown.
