THE REV. JOHN MACGOWAŃ.
The P. & 0. 16. "Khyber” left Lon- don on Mar. 31.
The London Missionary Society announces the death on March 17 of the Rev. John Macgovat, the well- Apr. 3. known missionary.
Mr. Macgowan reached Shanghai in 1859, and in 1863 was transferred to the Amoy Mission. In that district he worked enthusiastically among the Chinese and built up many self- supporting churches.
He was s
man of great literary gifta; his history of China and other works having had wide cirenlation. After over 50 years of service in China, he retired a few years ago, Until recently he was in vigorous health, constantly preaching and lecturing in the interests of the China Mission.
During Mr. Macgowan's residence in Chira he was extremely popular with Chinese as well as foreigners and his dipen-minded mission work will long be remembered. He was a talented writer, and his descriptions! of life in China, especially in bis booka "Lights and Shadows of Chinese Life" and "Chinere Folk Lore" are well-known.
THE WORLD THEATRE.
This afternoon the most exciting and baffling mystery play ever produced, entitled, "A Feice in the Dark," in five parts will be screened at the World Theatre. The principal

at the private esnatorium of one Dr. Hugh Sainsbury where among 'other pastimes are Mrs. Lydiard, a deaf wheel chair invalid, Joseph Crampton, an aged blind man and Adde Warren, a Society Girl. The surprising element of the play is care fully followed out, so that the audience, until the very final scenes, does not know the identity of the murderer. The Paramount Magazine No. 3599 prezents beautiful Fcenes worth seeing followed by a fire comedy.
