Dance and be good-looking is the attractive proposal which Mr. Edward Boott elaborates in his new book, "Dancing for Strength and Beauty, which is published (George Allen, 12s. 63)
But the dancing must be of the right kind:
Dancing of a superior order, ramas cent dancing, combining the elegance of the ancient Greeks with the
sixteenth vicity of eighteenth century ideals, does actually tend to improve the looks of those who practise it.

Dances that produce exhilaration like the genuine waltz, tend nnmistakably to soften the features and brighten the facial expression of the dancer.
Facility, however, in the beautiful ald dances is not to be acquired by the practice of gymnastics only, since Bevere strain tends to "harden the features"; and "certainly not by practising some of the decadent wriggling movements that recently disgraced our ballrooms.”
Mr. Scott relects the minnet as the “dance par excellence, best adapted and for the promotion of grace beauty," with the reservation, how- |ever that it must always be kept in
mind that
the genuine dance of our ancestors bears little, if any, resemblance, to the so-called "minuets" we have for many years past been accustomed to see represented on the stage and elsewhere. These for the most part have been mere "fancy dances," with much hand- raising and a lot of senseless bowing and curtsying.
Ardour for "renascence," however, does not blind Mr. Scott to the charm of our own island dances. Our Eng- lish hornpipe he.describes as "perhaps the most eminently characteristic of modern national dances. Everything! about the dance is redolent of the sea." And coupling it with the sword dance of Scotland, he adds;
I doubt if there are any finer national solo dances in the world. What country has dances sa vizor- rous, so manly, so puro ?
