THE ADMIRAL LINE'S NEW
SHIPS.
Captain Martin F. Tarpey, port captain of the Admiral Line at Seattle during the last year, was to leave New York on November 18 in command. of the now $8,000,000 combined' passenger and freight steamship "Bay State, which has been allocated, with tho sister ship "Pine Tree State,” Captain M. M. Jensen, to the Admiral Line for operation between Puget Sound and the Orient. When the two vessels take their places in the sailings schedule, the Admiral Line will put into effect plans which have been long maturing to establish a fortnightly service to and from the ports of Japan, China and Manile:
The "Pine Tree State" cleared for Seattle October 26, and, will start its maiden voyage from Seattle to the Orient December 10. The "Bay State" is expected at its home port December 5, and will esil on its initial trans-Pacific voyage January 7.
Capt. Tarpey is widely known among mariners of the Pacific coast, He achieved distinction for haroism, when the steamship Valencia," en route from San Francisco to Seattle, crashed on the rocks on the western; 'aboro of Vancouver island in 1906.);
There were 167 persons aboard. All but 25 perished.~ Captain Tarpey, then a young quartermaster, saved eighteen of these.
Captain Tarpey went to sea when he was soventeca, choosing sail out of Philadelphia. Then be transferred to steam, coming to the Pacific Coast in 1900. In 1907 he was licensed as a second officer and three years later obtained master's papers. He served with the fleet of the historic Pacific Coast Steamship Company until it was absorbed by the Pacific Steamship' Company, the present Admiral Line.
