PROSPECTS OF TRADE WITH

THE FAR EAST.`

Sir Raymond Dennis, K.B.E., who is Managing Director of Messrs. Dennis Bros., Ltd., motor vehicle man- ufacturers, in the picturesque Surrey town of Guildford, has just returned to England after a twenty months* business tour of the world, visiting, amongst other countries, Burmsh, Federated Malay States, Dutel East Indies, China, and Japan. Sir Raymond thinks that the op- portunities for foreign trade in motor vehicles has been exaggerat:d, because-and here the Far East is directly concerned the condition of the roads and weakness of the bridges prohibit the free use of mechanically propelled vehicles. Japan is men. tioned as a case in point, where in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kobe the maximum gross load allowed is four,. three, and two tona respectively. Despite Sir Raymond Dennis's conten- tions, we believe that the markets for commercial vehicles in the Far East are well worth careful ex- ploitation. Roads are not likely to be constructed nor bridges strengthened until the necessity for doing so is made perfectly obvious, One of the most potential methods for achieving this is by showing that the vehicles are here ready and waiting for such develop ments. If manufacturers wait until roads are ready for them, then progress. will be slow indeed. America has not adopted this course." In par ticular is it nécessary to familiariee the Chinese with the advantages of motor traffic. The foreign element in China does not need-such education. In the meantime, many makers in Great Britain produce the lighter vehicle which is suitable for the Far East. For such a great potential market exists in this part of the world. Sir Raymond Dennis is much impress- ed with the fact that foreign markets- prefer British goods. Surely this goodwill is worth fostering!
