POISON GAS A DEGRADATION
OF SCIENCE.
One of the most bestial episodes of the war," was how the introduction of poison gas as a weapon was described by Sir Edward Thorpe, president of the British Association. In his opening addresss of the Edinburgh meetings. which was read, in his absence, by Sir A. Exing.
"April 23. 1515." said Sir Edward, which saw the clouds of the asphy- xisting chlorine slowly wafted from the German trenches towards the lines of the Allies, witnessed nue of the minst bestialepixies in the history of the war. The world stood aghast at such a spectacle of barbarism. Germer kultur apparently bad absolutely no ethical value.
"Between that date and September. 1918, ao fewer that eighteen forms of poisons-gases, liquids, and solide— were employed by the Germans.
"How it originated among the Germans whether by the direct unprompted action of the Higher Command, or, as is more probable, at the instance of persons connected with the great manufacturing con- cerns in Rhineland. bas, so far as I know, not transpired."
If the League of Nations is vested with any real power, added Sir Edward, it should be rossible for it to devise means of arresting this 'rew phase of warfare and to ensure their saccesstul application. Steps should be taken without delay to make the moral influence of the civilised world 5t preme.
NO TINE TO BE LOST. To judge by what was known of the work now being done in various parts of the world, there was
time
to be lost, for there was every possi- bility that the use of these foul de- vices would be largely extended, unless stopped.
In conclusion, he warned scientista that an educated public opinion will refuse to give credit to any body of scientific men who employ their talents in devising means to develop and perpetuate a mode of warfare which is abhorrent to the higher in- stincts of humanity.
"This Association, I trust, will set its face against the continued degradatios of
in thus science sugmenting the horrors of war. It could have no loftier task than to use its great influence in arresting & course which is the very negation of civilisation"
Dealing with the general progress of science, the address said that un- fortunately the industrial world had, in the past under-rated the value of research, but the indication that the nation was at length aroused to its importance was the creation of the Department of Scientific and Indus- trial Research.
The new Department, it pointed out, dealt with a wide range of sub- jects, such as building, food preserva- tion. fuel economy, mining, the *preservation of antiquities, water-
power, and various industries.

There is in London an Englishman who has temporarily lost his voice through indulging in the unaccustom- ed luxury of talking bis language. He is Mr. Leonard Flem- ming, who for the past 18 years has been resident on a lonely farm in the Orange River Colony, in South Africa, where his nearest neighbour-and he is a Dutchman-is half an hour's ride. distant.
Ever since he has been in England. Mr. Flemming, for the sheer delight of using his native tongue, has been talking about 10 hours a day. But consider his provocation!
On his lonely farm, where there is no other white man, he is saying this

Perhaps Mr. Lucas does not koor that, until a few years ago, the bowler was the correct hat to wear with a frock coat on every ceremonial occasion in Japan, and is still the vogue in the interior and the colonies. The reason for this is interesting. In the early days after the Restoration, most of the foreigners who were in- vited to Japanese functions were Am- eri on missionaries: These good men, having no silk hats, attended in frock coats and bowlers. The Japanese naturally thought this to be the correct costume, and an order was made that all who attended State ceremonisis should be similarly attired
