NEW YORK, October 7.
The first British overseas government loan in the United States is now being negotiated, the National City Company offering $12,000,000 worth of Queensland boada currency for 30 years at an interest of 7 per cent. In connection with the foregoing it may be recalled that Queensland ruden- voured to arrange the flotation of a loan in London last year but negotiations broke down in consequence of financial circles requiring guarantees in view of certain legislation passed in Queensland. These were not forthcoming.

The fondness of the inhabitants of Chinon for huge wine cellars and under-ground starehouse is given as the reason for the landslide which dei stroyed some houses perched on the flank of the hill overlooking the River Vienne.
The town is built on limestone which is honeycombed with cellars. Owing to underground springs thees are always of icy coolness.. The well- known Chinon wine is best appreciated when it comes fresh from one of these cellars Wine merchants and private individuals have been continually enlarging these rocky cellars until they have cut away the foundations of s part of the town.
The municipal authorities have now forbidden any more cellam to be cat and
are taking steps to have; those already existing shared up.
