The Ostemi mail stentner Jan Braydel, while going to Dover, collided with the Norwegian steamer Salina in a fog, near the Goodwins
The Salina sak in four minutes. Tex persons were drowned, and 2 were fatally ajared, besides a number of others in- jured.
Tugs were despatched from Dover to assist in rescue.

The violinist Kubelik, who was travel- ling from Frague on a tour to England, after eight yrars' absence, was a passenger by the Jan Breydel.
Interviewed. he said he was sitting in a deck cabin reading, when he beard peo- ple rushing. Everyone could see that a collision was inevitable The question was which boat would sink, but there was no panic. The mail boat struck the Salina, which sank in four minutes Boats from the Jan Breyiel were immedi ately lowered, and saved twelve of the Salina passengers.
Kubelik asked what his Erat impale was, replied, "My first thought was for my violls. I put a lifebuoy round it, to that it should be saved; for a man can save himself, but a violin is helpless It was terrible to see mes, especially the captain's boy, drowning. I could not look at the sinking boat."
