A mermaid is to be seen in Bloomsbury, of all places. She sits on her tail, as all the very best mermaids do, beneath a glass CESC, goggling with stark, fishy eyes at the many visitors who pilgrimage to see her.

The story of the mermaid is a romance. Her birthplace was the West Coast of Africa but nobody knows how long she has been in Lon- don or who brought her here. Two doctors who examined her were com- pletely puzzled. The figure, wizened dry like a mummy, is about sixteen inches long, with a female form from the waist up, and below an excellent. fish tail. The baby skull is grinning grotesquely, disclosing twenty-five tiny teeth.

Originally the mermaid was picked up by the proprietor of a Gray's Inn road shop at a sale of goods in a West London house. He kept it as his mascor, and prospered in business. Then he died, and the curio came on the market once again.

Sir Arthur Keith, conservator of the museum of the Royal College of Surgeons, who knows more about monstrosities than any man living. was working amid skull and skele tons when he told a Daily Express representative that similar mermaids, supposedly real, were frequently offered to the museum. "They are fakes," he said, "made by drying the body of a monkey and balf a 6sh, and grafting the two together by winding skin around them.
