MOUNT EVEREST EXPEDITION.

The Mount Everest expedition arrived at Tingri on July 19. All are well except Mr. Raeburn who has been invalided to Sikkim. Mountaineers are now exploring the northwest approaches of Mount Everest. Others are engaged in short scientific excursions westward. Already 4.500 square males of new country have been surveyed but the monsoons are hampering

operations.

Foreign students are arriving in large numbers to register at summer schools in the French universities, the Paris University's courses in French arts and civilisation being especially patronized-Haras.

Much interest has been awakened in bearded circles by the great value set on his beard by Chester, the chief at the Royal Palace Hotel, and the still higher price put on his own beard, by Mr. Willie Clarkson.

Another astonishing instance of the value of beards on occasion was given by Mr. Arthur Bourchier to a Daily Chronicle representative the other day.

AUTHORS' FEES EVADED.

Paris, Jupe 15.-Two French dramatic authors appeared yesterday in the Paris courts to make complaint that some persas or persons un- known had stolen their plays and were having them performed with- out consent and without paying authors' fees. The two authors are Paul Armont and Felix Gandera, and the stolen plays were, when played in Paris, entitled "l'Ecole des Cocottes" and "Le Coucher de la Marie,"

The curious thing about the theft is that neither play has ever been
