IRISH PEACE PROSPECTS.
NEWSPAPERS GLOOMY WITHOUT REASON,
"SITUATION QUITE UNCHANGED."
LONDON, July 19.
In contrast with the early optimism, the papers today are somewhat gloomy regarding the prospects of Irish settlement, but the fact is that the } situation is quite unchanged. A very remarkable feature is the extra- ordinary reserve maintained both by the Sinn Felners and the Government in disclosing nothing regarding the course of negotiations. The reason why conversations between Mr. Lloyd George and Mr. De Valera have been adjourned until July 21 is simply due to the fact that the Premier is fully] engaged to-day and to-morrow with the Dominions premiers. Mr. Meighen departs for Canada on July 21 and it is imperative that certain matters in connection with the conference be finally settled before then.
SEEKING BASIS FOR A CONFERENCE.
LONDON. July 19.
Sir James Craig and his Ulster colleagues have returned to Belfast where it is not expected that he will return to London till the preliminaries Lave been settled and a scheme for a conference formulated. This is regarded as indicating that there will be no further indirect negotiations India has won the rubber in the Davis Cup eliminating matches against between Mr. De Valera and Sir James Craig. LONDON, July 20.
Mr. De Valera in a statement declares that Ireland demands the right to choose freely how she shall be governed, namely independence. She Mr. only requests freedom from British agression and interference. Desmond Fitzgerald's cficial statement amplifies this as measing to claim that the Irish nation is for President Wilson's Fourteen Points with the right of small nations to self-determination. He says: "The Ulster Cabinet
