LORD MILNER'S FAREWELL
Laxnox, January 18th. Lord Milner spoko in a valedictory strain when providing at a farewell lunch to the Earl of Stradbrake, the Governor-desiguato of Victoria, in London, and expressed the opinion that the position of a Dominion Governor was not a whit les important. and infiential than under the Crown administration & Governor, like a bug, reigsed, but did not govern Lord Miner declared the the communities ware delight. ed to uphold the position where the Governor possessed personality and charac ter. Pursuing the contention he poïated to the fact that the influence and import Gra ance of the Crown was increasing ju Britain urda democratic government, and described the supposition that Gov- ernors had an idle position sa a great Lord Milner emphasised the fact that nobody would force State Governora apon Australians from here if the Auriza- lars desired local appointments.
error
Lord Milner, replying to the toast of is health, took advantage of what waA probably the last opportunity he had of addressing a company which was largely reprmentative of the Dominjous, and said thông đaring the past two years at the Colonial Office he had met with nothing but the gresiest kindness, sympathy and cordial co-operation from the visiting Dominion Pramiërs, Ministers, High Com missioners, Agente-General and Promen connected with the Dominions. He believed he derived great advantage in the admin- istration of the Colonial Ocs from his past experience as a Colonial Governor. He was convinced that the successful să- ministration of the Colonies and the maintenance of good relations between Great Britain and the self-governing Deminions would be prompted by the co- stang few of men backwards and forwards and by ensuring that men responsible for administration in Great Britain of affairs connected with the Empire outside be men who, as far as possible, had personal experience of the difficulties and conditions of countries with which they had to deal. -(Cheers-)

It has been fitted out most elaborately, including a marble swim- ming-bath, and is said to be the largest passenger ship silost.

FALL OF LEIGUES MIKISTET.
LONDON, January 12th.
It is probable that the immediate, effect of the fall of the Leygues Government will be postponement of the Inter- Allied Conference in Paris which is to be held on January 19th. The defect is attzi- buted to an accumulation of causes con- nected with internal and external policy, but the Chamber is by no means sati.
