COMPENSATION FOR HEAT.

Along, the Mexican border is one of the hottest and driest tracts in the United States, but it has the com- pensating advantage of being at the same time one of the easiest places to obtain a drink. Many amusing tales are told in the American news- papers how even in these bone-dry times it is still possible to buy a drink of high-voltage Equer" on the Mexipan boundary. To understand bow this can be done it must be remembered that for many hundreds of miles the frontier between the United States and Mexico is absolute ly open. In some tewas, the boundary fine actually runs along the middle of a street, and thirsty sols need only cross the roadway to get what they require. in certain districts, how ever, a wire fence marks the frontier, but even here liquer of any kind rum, brandy, wine, mescal, paique, or anything else can be obtained by the simple process of paying money to the Mexican vendor and sucking the liquor through a straw across the boundary. The American courts in a test case have decided that this is not "importation."!
