POLICE INSPECTOR RETIRES.
Sub-Inspector Sutton of the Hong- kong Police Force, who is at present on Home leave, has, it is understood, been invalided out of the Force; and is retiring on persion. He was sta- tioned at the Water Police Station' at the time he left for Home. The Inspec- tor is well known in the Colony. He first arrived here on August 27, 1901. Success followed his work, and pro- motion was rapid. It can be said of him that he well deserves the pension which he has earned after nearly nineteen "years" of valuable and faithful service. This sudden announcement of his retirement will be received by many as a great surprise, as Inspector Sutton was in the prime of life when he left here: Sergeant Macdonald, who is also ou leave, has been promoted to Sub- Inspector in place of Inspector Sutton. During his absence from the Colony, -Sergeant Brown of the Water Police will act for Sub-Inspector Macdonald.
AN IMPUDENT SNATCHER.
Before Mr. N. L. Smith at the Magistracy this morning, a Chinese was charged with snatching a purse from Mrs. L. M. Perkins, yesterday. He pleaded Dot guilty, and said that he was walking near the .Chartered Bank' yesterday, when the: rain suddenly came down. Not having an umbrella, he ran. Whilst running, he kicked against something. Looking down he saw a purse and picked it up. Mrs. Perkins said that she rode down to the Chartered Bank at 4.30 p.m. yesterday. As she took out her purse to pay the chair coolie, the defendant, who was walking usder the verandah, bumped into her, and the next thing she knew.
that her perse was gone... She called out to the chair coolies to chase the defendant. They did so, and caught him. The purse was found in his hand. The defendant denied stubbornly that he saatched the purce from Mrs. Perkins's hand. He pointed out that had he wanted to steal, hecould have snatched the large band bag which Mrs Perkins bad hanging from her arm. His Worship in passing sentence of three months' hard labour, and 12 strokes with the cat," remarked that the defendant's suggestion, whilst in- genious, was not conclusive, as it was easier to conceal a small purse i than a large hand bagi
