£1,000 A YEAR FROM AN ACRE.

ENUMPH OF INTENSIVE CULTURE.

At Golden Green, near Tonbridge, Kent, is to be seen what is probably the best garden in England. Its two Acres produced 1,630 worth of food in nine months, or more than 1,000 A year per acre.

There would be no call for any im- ports of food it more people followed the lead of Mr. M. A. Philips, the cager an emerprising New Zealand er who on the eve of war created this garden our of a rough paddock, built the wooden and most comfortable dwelling-house. the glass-houses on his own pattern, wind the dark corri dors for mushrooms. The soil is now golden in many senses, but the planis grow so thick that you must lift their leaves before you can catch a glimpse of the nucld.

ATTAR OF ROSES.

ABANDONING PRODUCTION

A Bulgarian producer of attar of roses has abandoned 5,000 acres of rose gardens as the industry does not pay, and has substituted more remunerative crops, including tobacco, The average annual production of attar of roses during the period from 1900 to 1912 was about 126,800 The production fell to ounces. 85,000 ounces in 1917; and 52,000 ounces. in 1919, while it is predicted that the present year's yield will show a further decrease.

During the war owing to Bulgaria being cut off from the principal markets the stocks of altar of roses increased to 275,000 and about one third of this was sent to the United States in part payment for flour early

in 1919.
