END OF THE SHIPPING BOOM.

The appearance of Lloyd's report för 1919 indicates the great change that is coming over the shipping post- tion. A new situation is rapidly de- veloping. Presently the world will have all the ships that it needs, The shipyards of the United Kingdom', turned out last year 1,620,442 tons

· gross-272,322 fons more than inv. 1918, but still nearly 16 percent under the record output of 1913. The output of other countries was 5,524,- | 107 tons) or thres and one third dimes imers than the British production. The extent of the change will be in- stantly seen when it is mentioned that in 1913 the British, output was actually 35 per cent greater than that: · of the rest of the world.

The principal factor in the change is, of course, the new shipbuilding | Industry of the United States which

last year produced 4,075,385, tans. The true proportions of this output can be seen when we compare it with the British record year of 1913 when the world's total product on of met chapt vessels of over 100 tons burden was 3,332,882. To this total the Un- Ited Kingdom contributed 1,932,153. tons, and America only 276,448, Next to America comes Japan where in 1919 611883 tons of steel steam- | ers were launched, a figure which is practically equal to the whole output of Japan for the 22 years prior to 1913. Japan's figures comprise 42 per cent of the world's tonnage launched, exclusive of England and America. Another noteworthy fea- ture of Lloyd's report is the advance · made by Canada which last year launched 271,264 tons, including over 150,000 tons of steel steamers. The total for the British Dominions reached 358,728 tons, by far the largest ever recorded In 1913 their production was only 48,339 tons. The only other country which laun- ched over 100,000 fors last year was Holland with 137,086 tons. The total for the world 7,134,549 tons--- shows an increase of 1,697,000 tods as compared with 1919 and 3,811,000 tons as compared with the pre-war record year of 1913.

The total steam tonage of the world in 1914 was 45,403,877. During the war the Germans destroyed:

Ships Tonnage Great Britain --2,197 7,638,020 France

238 696,845 Italy.................... 230 742,365 Japah......... 29 120,176 United States.. 80 341,512

Totaltonnage——————9,639.01S.

At the end of last year the total merchant shipping of the world was returned by Lloyds at-47,897,407 tons. Last year, therefore, the world had two and a half million tons more than it possessed at the out- break of war, and during the year it has added seven millions. This figure, of course, is subject to certain dis- counts--in respect of old ships that are being replaced and the natural. wastage by mishaps of the / sea. Nevertheless it points clearly enough to the fact that boomi days are over. It does not follow that shipowners and shipbuilders need fear anything like a collapse The increase of two and a half million tons in probably still short of what the "natural" in crease would Have been if the war had not strangled the ordinary de velopment of trade for five years.

effective competitor with steel in normal conditions, and the wooden ships, of which Americe launched a million and a half tous 1918 and | 1919, will depreciate rapidly. On the other side of the account, however, must be put the fact that the demands for tonnage connected with the wararealmost extinct. The immense task of demobilizing the armies which assembled from the ends of the earth, to destroy German militarism has been virtually completed. The American, Australians, Canadians, South Africans are home. There remain the Czechs to be repatriated, some Chinese laborers still to be? taken home, and a few German and Austrian prisoners to be return ed to their countries. But those things are trivial when compared with the 'demobilization, and in a very short time the shipping of the world will be available for the ordin ary trade needs of the world. These,.. for two or three years to come, will be above normal, and there will be ample employment for all the avail able tonnage. Boom conditions are over, and the era which is opening. will be one of keen national and in- ternational competition Shipowners will regret the semi-fabulous rewards which they earned during the war.

but they know well enough that

cheap and speedy transportation is the life blood of trade, and only com petition can ensure that Japan Advertiser.
