THE EARNINGS OF CARGO STEAMERS.
Although the profits earned by shipe ping companies owning cargo steamers have been highly satisfactory during the past few years, the fact that a considerable number of experienced- owners have disposed of their vessels. seems to indicate that they inticipate ja considerable decline in earning
power in the near future.
From same interesting statistics published by our " contemporary, Fairplay, we gather that the average dividend paid by cargo. boat companies for the eight yea ended 1911 amounted to only 3.3 per ċent., and, in this connection, fe must be borne in mind these the afteöunts. ser aside for depreciation during that period were quite inadequate. Ha proper allowances been made. for re- newals practically the whole earnings would have been absorbed. ∙In the two clear years preceding the va 1912 and 1913, considerable im- prodvement was made, the dividenda amounting to 6.82 per cent. and 12,58 per cent.. respectively, and the allow ance for depreciation to about 7 pers cent. and 15 per cent., the depre ciation, it should be noted. is-cate culated on the original cost "67", steamers. For 1914 the dividend fell to 10.38 per cent., rising to "f1.43 per cent. in the following year, and reaching the high figare of 18.5 per cent. in 1916: The record was resch ed in 1917. when an average dividendTM of 19.24 per cent. was paid, and since that time the dividends paid hav fallen to a slightly lower level than those for the pre-war year 1913; :- Agures for 1918 and 1919 were 12:15 per cent and 12.47 per cent.. re spectively. The allowance for depress ciation amounted to 9.7 per cent, is 1914, and to 10.2 per cent. in 1915. In 1916 the figure reached was 17.3 per cent., while for the three follow- ing years the figures were 13 pet cent.. 4.3 per cent.. and. 5.85 per cent, respectively. With regard t future prospects of stripping com- panies it is estimated that, in the cur- rent year, some 12,000,000 tocis dead- weight of shipping will be built and placed upon the trade routes of the world, and it is not unreasonable to anticipate that this will have a con siderable effect upon freight rates. In view of the present enormous cost of constructing new shipping, the action of those owners who have sold their fleets is not surprising, though it must be admitted that the purchasers are

complete new 7,500-ton cargo steamt- er was lowest in the middle of" 1908, the figure at this time being £36,500. Immediately before the outbreak of war. the cost of a similar ship would have been about £42,500. The cost had risen to 560,000 by the end of 1914, and had more than doubled. this figure by the end of the following year. By the end of 1916 the cost had risen to £187,500, but declined somewher after this time, the figures for the ends of 1717 and 1818 being £165,000- and £169,000, respectively. In 1919 a further enormous rise in "cost"be- curred, so that, in December last; a
