Lady Carbery stated in evidence that after landing at Mombasa, in Africa, they had no conveniences for travelling. Going up 'country they had long days' rides on herseback, which were extremely painful to her. She complained of it. but was, never long theless, compelled to endure days in the saddle..

At the end of the journey she was in a very exhausted and distressed condición. She had to live in a tent, and they had but two blankets. She Buffered intensely from the cold, for they were at an elevation of 6,000 feet. They spent their time bunting: wild beasts.

She was compelled by her husband to live that wild. Hife. He, made her hunt and shoot and tackle savage animals by herself. When she show- ed: incapacity for the work he abused her. When he compelled her to live in a grass hut in Afflea it was the rainy season. There was no glass in the windows, and rain penetrated the place. As a result of that cordi- tion of living she took malaria, and was seriously ill for a long time.

She did not care to go to Africa, but she understoed it would be only for a short time. They were there for seven months in 1918. While there her husband struck her with a sjambok three or four times, and her body was marked.

His Lordship: Was he under the influence of drink when he struck TouNo it was his violent tem- per.

Lady Carbery added that there was one child of the marriage, a girl] now three years of age. Her hus- band had admitted and boasted to her that he had a good time at Cairo and Zanzibar, and that he had mis- conducted himself.

Mr. Justice Samuels granted the petlioner a decree of divorce a mensa et thoro or the grounds of mis- conduct and cruelty specified.

John Evans Freke, 10th Baron Carbery, was born in May 1892, and succeeded to the title on the death, of bis father in 1898. He was educated at Harrow and Cambridge. The tile is an Irish one, and the principal family seat is Castle Freke, Cork..

Lord Carbery was the first peer to fly the Channel. He made the flight in 1913, only three weeks after receiving his pict's title.

Lady Carbery before her marriage was Miss Jose Metcalfe, daughter of Mr. E. J. Metcalfe, of Chester place. Hype Park square.

(1) Unemployment insurance, on a contributory basis, to be extended te practically the whole employed population between the ages of 16. and 70-broadly speaking, all who are included in the State scheme of health insurance. The number is estimated at about 11,750,000 per

sons.

(2) The apnual cost to the State will be from £3,000,000 to £4,000,000. At present unemployment insurance costs about £1,250,000 a year:

The existing Act applies to about 3,500,000 people.

Weekly benefits under the original. Act, those payable as from December 25, 1919, and those proposed in the Bill compare as follows:-

The contributions of the insured persons will be at the rate of 3d. per week from employers and employed for men and 24d. per week from employers and employed for women. The State will contribute one third of the combined contributions of employers and workpeople.

Lower rates of contribution and tenefit. are proposed for boys and girls between the ages of 16 and 18.

An opportunity will be afforded for industries to contract out of the general scheme by setting up special schemes of their own, giving equal or superior advantages, to be ap proved by the Minister of Labour under special order. Power is also reserved to the Minister, it he thinks fit, to set up a special scheme on his own initiative for any particular industry.

NAVAL RATINGS.

An Admiralty order states that ratings serving on foreign stations. otherwise than in Bengoing ships, are until further orders to be relieved.on completion of two years' service) abroad, except in cases where a shorter period is already provided for. On the question of determining the length of ship's commissions, the Board desire to ascertain the views of the Service. Commanders-In-Chief and senior naval, officers are there fore requested to take auch steps as will enable them to render considered reports on the matter by the end of May next.
