The Prime Minister and Mr. Ballour slipped away, and Lady Astor was left alone between the the table on two Front Benches which lies the mace. The Clerk of the House took her credentials, gave her the Book, administered the oath, and bade her sign her name.

SIGNING THE ROLL

Several times during this ritual she turned round to smile in answer to whispered words from the Front Benches, and laughter rose again at the feminine grace which-already was altering the ways and manners of the House.

Then she bent seriously to her business, and very firmly and calmly signed a name on a list where, since there was ever an English Parliament, ne woman's name was written till now.

The Clerk of the House bowed very courteously and led her forward to the Chair, where the Speaker sits enthroned in, dignity--aloof and al most inhuman in his long silences, like a sculptured figure.

But now he was human. He teaned forward and took the lady's band held out to him at full arm's length, and drew her a little closer to his Chair, and whispered words which the House did not hear congratula- tions.

The House did not hear, but was watching, and at this strange rew sight of the lady by the Speaker's Chair there were chuckles of laughter,) loadly audible. A voice said in warr ing to the Clerk of the House. "You will lose your job!" and laughter broke out again. Lady Astor bowed. to Mr. Speaker and disappeared behind his Chair.

The House of Commons proceeded with the business of the day, but they knew that because that woman had; come history had been altered for them, and that this advent is but the beginning of a chapter in the poli tical life of the nation.

By a strange freak of chance, the first woman to sit as a member of Parliament is not English born. By name of Nancy Witcher Langhorne before her marriage, she is the daughter of a gentleman of Virginia, and by another curious chance this daughter of democracy" is a peeress who now sits in the House of Com. IODS.

Her American spirit will bring something new to nur old assembly, but her woman's wit will be a greater change, and beyond all doubt she is but the forerunner of many women of our own people who will be among the legislators and contrivers of that New World which is already appear- ing 'above the horizon of old thought and old traditions,
