ENGLISH AS SHE IS

WROTE

(By H. K. Hales.)"

Not even in these enlightened days of free education is the Kinty=" English free from mutilation and miss representation. The military censors of letters must have often during the last few years met with waay amusing instances of communicat- ions, which, taken literally, would hardly have correctly conveyed the sender's wishes to the recipients.

I have recently had my attention drawn to some curious letters written by soldiers wives to the officers deal ing, with the separation allowances The first evidently writes with the full assurance that the arrangements" bave been carried out according to... plan:

"Dear Sir,-In accordance with instructions on the paper. I have giver birth to a daughter on April 1

That miracles have evidently not ceased is evidenced by the in formation "You have changed my boy into a little girl. Will it "make any difference?****

The next request is for a manual on obstetrics or. information on the subject I am expecting to be con- faed next month. Will you please let me know what I am to do about It 7,"

Our next enquirer is certainly pos sessed of a shrewd and commercial mind My Bill has been put in charge of a 'Spitoon"; shall I get any more money? "

Our next correspondent is quite annoyed with the military authorl- tes "Will you please send my money as early as possible, as I am walking about Bolton like a pauper:"""

A firm believer in a future life among the spirits of the blest writes Unless I receive my huse

AWARD HOW

'Furlong and has now gone away, to the 'mind' sweepers,”

There is something deeply involved and mysterious in the following -epistle: "We have received your letter. I am his grandmother and grandfather. He was brought up in this house in answer to your letter.. Mrs. Haynes has been put to bed with a little lad wife of Peter Haynes.

A Yesigned and happy disposition with a quiet acceptance of what the future has in store is not often met with In this vale of tears. I am writing these few lines for Mrs. Morgan, who carnt write herself and is expecting to be confined and can do with it."

The need for the vermiform appendix has never been satisfact- orily explained by the medical pro fession, but, of what exact benefit: is not disclosed in the following letter, although it is evident some use has been found for it :-"When I received you letter, I was ill in bed with happendecetitis. It will be very useful now."

The following letter discloses •233 entire absence of friendly feeling towards the authorities, but in justice to the sender, there does appear to be some grounds for complaint "Just a few lines to say that owing to your delay in sending my money, we have not a morsel of food in the house. Hoping you are the same."

I will conclude with a letter which I should think must not be inter preted too literally, otherwise an erroneous opinion might be formed,. and an altogether wrong impression created in the mind of the recipient, but it may serve as a warning to those of us who are a little careless In writing exactly what we mean to convey. It is as follows

Dear Sir, I have been in bed with the doctor for three days. He does not seem to do me any good.. If you don't come at once, I shall have to send for another."
