GAS WARFARE.

A SHORT RETROSPECT OF THE GERMAN CHEMICAL OFFENSIVE.

Many retereaces have been made recently to offensive and defensive methods incidental to the ars of chemical warfare which Jay between the spring of 1915 and the cessation lof hostilities.. A briet review, which does not claim to unfold, new or start- fing information, may be of interest. to readers who did not become ac quainted with the lethal perversions" of science, that added so much to the horror and suffering of all who en- dured the ordeal by battle.

HISTORICAL..

It was on April 22. 1915. in the neighbourhood of Langemarck, that the Germans loosed their first gas attack.. The chlorine wave swept to- wards and over the French and Cana- dian troops in that sector. Quite un- suspecting of the significance attached to the yellow-green mist that approach- ed them, the troops were soon choking frantically in its clutches. A gap was made in the line. but the results. though sericus enough, were not dis- astrous. Owing to the heroism and endurance of the men concerned.

The thrill of horror experienced by all civilised peoples when this fiend ish manceuvre became known needs no recalling. It was a crime' against humanity which in a calendar of dark deeds stands out indelible and unfor- gettable in its horror..

WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN.

The chlorine in this. the first gås. attack was liberated from cylinders concentrated on a front of 600 yards. It has been stated by those most likely to know, that had the Germans not been afraid of the terrible weapon they were about to employ, or had they conserved their cylinders till they could free the gas-cloud on a wider front, and for a longer period, nothing. could have saved Calais from falling into their hands: the door to that all- important port would have been open- ed-videly opened-by the sickly cloud of death. Fortunately for us.. this attack was in the nature of an experiment, and before it was re- peated the respite had enabled our men to be supplied with means, tem- porary and unsatisfactory though they. were, for combating the peril. It vill be preferable to deal with the defen sive methods adopted at this period. and their subsequent development. in a separate and latter portion of this article.

UNFAVOURABLE WINDS,

It was not till December 19, 1915, that the greatest cloud-gas attack against the British front took place. This occurred to the north of the Ypres salient, on a front of 3 miles.. Gas was released continuously for one hour, but owing to the protective mea-" sures which had been adopted by this time the number of casualties was comparatively small, although 25,000 troops were in the area of attack.

By this time, however, the Ger- mans had adopted another medium for distributing their noxious vigours. This was the gas-shell, of which, in due course, numerous varieties were evolved. The gas-shell bad particu- lar advantages from the point of view of those using it. Its use was not dependent upon a favourable wind; the effects of a gas attack could be produced within a strictly limited or an extended area as desired; and, moreover, until the bombardment de- scended upon the enemy, not the slightest warning was given of its advent.

These projectiles may be consider- ed from the point of view of the II- ings they contained. Of these there were several varieties, all-unpleasant, in a greater or less.degree.

These markings were effected by means of coloured paims. The British authorities adopted the prin ciple of referring to the different varieties of German gas-shell in terms of these markings, and hence in all official reports, and among all ranks -- of the Army, the names Blue Cross; Green Cross, and Yellow Cross came to signify the respective types of gas- shell the enemy was in the habit of sending over.
