The great dearth of shipping and“ the high freights now obtainable says The Englishman, have afforded. an opportunity to the "owner of Arab dhows, built for the most pare in the Persian Gulf. These de are now making voyages to very distant parts, and some of them.it is stated, tre making runs nommely to and from the, Persian Gulf. but are taking op a settled programme between ports not connected with the Gulf at all. Others are acting the part of tramps and are prepared- to accept freight to any port to which they are asked to convey freight,
Before the war, although a dhow sometimes vised. Calcutta, 150 bulk of them rever ventured to round Ceylon and were content with the voyage between Bombay and the Gulf and Red Sea ports. To-day they are visiting Calcurta in dozens. Some boldly vecture across the Bay to Burma and others, still more daring, are facing the dangers of of the China seas.
Arab dhows are not well found sailing ships bufit as the result of Long experience by experts who understand strain. They are nav gated for the most part without charts. The compass is the only instrument, of navigation that la employed 30 board. The boats are heavy, clumsy, and difficult to bandle... The accommodation for the sailors is of the most primitive kind. The staple food of the crew consists of dales. Indeed, the only provision that the crew, insist on la that of fresh water in sufficient quantities to meet the case of being becalmed or of being blown cut of a course. The Master or Nakoda is very often the owner of the vessel.

It is to be noted, however, that in spite of the great attractions that freizhts offer and the daring of the Arab sailors none have ventured into the Atlantic The Arabs say that the Atlantic is mucky for them. It possibly is. One, Nakoda, however, stated in Calcutta the other day that.. the real reason why European and American ports were not visited was that, in outside the Eastern seas the port authorities had rules and., regulations which the Arabs could not understand.. The Japanese, too, are said to be very fussy. But, for these regulations, which the Nakoda put, down to the jealousy of the steamship companies.. dhowas would cross both the Atlantic and the Pacific.
