Figures recently published by the Board of Trade show that during the month of August, 1919, Imports totalled £148,882.393, while exports amounted to $90,084,522, the adverse balance of trade being £59,747,871 for the month, or at the rate of Similar £704,974,452. per annum. returns for the eight months ending 'August 31" 1919, disclose that, the Imports were £1,018,334,779 and the exports £557,347,754, the adverse balance being £460,987,025 or at the rate of £691,480,538 per annum. On analysing the imports for the first eight | months of 1919, It is seen they were.i £146,973,905 higher than during the corresponding period in 1918 and of this. Increase £78,370,726 was for food, drink, and tobacco, while £94,620,040 was for raw materials and articles mainly unmanufactured, Articles wholly or mainly maru factured decreased by nearly $21,000,000. For the same period the experts were £202,270,668 higher than for the corresponding period In 1918. This increase was princip- ally explained by an addition of 533,719,322 under the heading of food, drink and tobacco; £59,636,406 extra for raw materials and aricies mainly unmanufactured, While £115,675,142. of the addition consist- ed of articles wholly or mainly manufactured.
