GANDA SUGGESTED,
A correspondent, who has lately travelled through the Dutch East Indies for many years, writes:
Conditions throughout the Dutch- East Indies are genèrally good--com- mercial, financial, industrial and political. The banka, hotels and other concerns that can be regarded as business. barometers are doing a good business. This is especially the case with the leading hotels, not. only in Java, but in the more import- ant cities in Sumatra and the Celebes. Practically all the larger towns report material increase in population, and also in business. Government em- ployees and others, who could not go on vacation to Holland during the war, bull: homes for themselves at Batavia. Many of these men with their families are now home, $0 that the new comers аге rent able to find dwellings to in that city. Generally the condi- tions in the larger cities of Java are unlike those in Java in respect to dwellings. Possibly the most con- spicuous municipal growth and 'ex- pansion is that of Sourabaya. It is absolutely impossible for the new coming European with family to rent a house. So far as I could determine, : after travelling and enquiring exter- nally there is comparatively little practical unrest, in the Dutch East Indies archipelago. Java is the only part of the archipelago where there could be unrest of an extent and character which would be disquieting to the government. Java is presibly next to Belgium in the density of its population. The island, with an area of about 50,000 square miles, has

The most formidable organisation engaged in propaganda agains: the government has its headqarters at Batavia. This organisation, while attracting considerable attention and, attimes, making somewhat formidable demonstrations of numerical strength, seems to get its inspiration from India. It is largely Mohammedan; at least its principal leaders are of that faith. A somewhat unusual cir cumstance is this An Armenian

and literary ability, is possibly the most conspicucus leader of this society. The government is observ... ing things quite closely, but does not appear at all disturbed over these, perhaps local evidences of dissatis- faction. I should say, as a mere Yankee- guess, that there was no occasion for alarm in Java. How- ever there are many Antelligent Dutchmen in the island who seem to` think the government is in for a rude awakening some of these days. I have talked with governors, residents, assistant residents, and other gov. ernment officials who are in a position to accurately determine sentiment among the people, and I am sure not "more than one Dutchman out of every ten in Java anticipates serious trouble.
There is evidence, among the lead- ing European business men of Java, of a desire that the government or some other agency shall embark on something fairly formidable as en ad- vertising propaganda, and enlighten the world somewhat as to the cordi- tions and prospects in the archi pelago, with its 850,000 square miles and approximately 47,000,000 people, Mr. E. G. Wesselink, formerly of Singapore, but now managing direc tor of the K.P.M., and other commer- cial leaders, are decidedly favourable to this proposed advertising propa. ganda: These men seem to be anxious that Americans, especially capitalists, should be informed of the conditions. American and British have made big investiments in rubber
plantations in Surnatra, and govern- ment officials are looking for further very important developments in that very large and exceed- ingly interesting Island. There are those extremely conserva- tive Dutchmen, however, who are not specially favourable to enlighten- ing the world about their big island possessions. "I don't know about advertising, and getting Americans and others to come in here," said an intelligent man-one of "the many well paid officials at the big oil. refinery at Balik Papan. Borneo-to me, several months ago. "If we have good things in these islands, as we certainly have, why not keep them for our own people?" This man is in a decided minority. I quoted his language to perhaps 25 prominent Dutchmen, whb not a single instance of endorsement of his sentiments.
