A KISS FOR THE PRINCE.-

POÄNADAN DAUGHTERS

STORM HIS ÛÄR.

The Erince of Wales mopored for three hours and a half on September 3 through the streets of Montreal": and the adjacent riverside suburbs. In the whole course of the triumphat journey of thirty-eight miles only two brief halta were made, and the welcome which the Prince received created a new record in demonstra. tions in Canadian cities. The ex perience in some respects was the most remarkable he has yet under- gone. The Prince' made this motor- car tour of the streets simply in order to see the people and that they might see him.

There was no formality of any kind Even, the usual yard of hon- our at the station was dispensed with, and the only unifama to be seen were. those of the military command. ant of the district and his staff, and there was only one silk, hat in the... procession. The ceremonial and pageantry is reserved for the state visit in October

All that the people saw that day was a fair haired boy in a grey lounge suit, perched on the top of the back seat of a motor car, waving his Hamburg, hat above his head and smiling all the while through the dust. I was a spectacle wholly different from what they had antici rated, but it was one which delighted: them intensely.

VETERAN'S WELCOME.

The Prince's train emerged from its retirement in a sidig ten miles from the city in time to deposit him at the Central Station at ten o'clock, where the mayor, the Anglican and Roman Catholic bishops, and other shake hands with him not forgetting the ninety three year old Lieutenant Patrick Mathew, a Crimean veteran,

atone at Portsmouth in 1848...

The devious route was cleverly planned to take the Prince..wib the mayoran hisside, through the greater part of the city, past all the most important institutions and factories, and showing him, the workmen's tenements and the mansions of the millionaires and every phase of the municipal life.

There are no half-hearted measures about the people of Montreal. They threw handfuls of confefti at the Prince, and with unblushing delibera tion festooned his car and himself with coloured paper streamers. They exploded firecrackers under the wheels, and blew an internal tattoo on every steam whistle and rang every bell within earshot. Small boys lined the tops of hoardings, armed with tin pans and sheets of metal. Some of them gathered in gangs, and whistled skrilly in unsion. SURPRISED BISHOP.

Girls pursued the car, defying the panting police. Two of them ran the gauntlet and rode triumphantly on the step to the very door of the pavilion at the top of Mont Royal, while the Prince, holding their autograph books on his knee, wrote his name.. Then the girls jumped off at the feet of the astonished Bishop Bruchesi, who, hat in his purple-gloved hards, was waiting to pay his respects to the august güest.. One daring young girl stormed the car suddenly while it was moving and The Prince, polite kissed the Prince, to the delight of the crowd.. but pink, resumed his faluta tions amid a hurricane, of cheers. The success of this attack, quickly became known, and half a dozen determined girls made a rush for the car when it returned to the station after lunch. They were, however, outflanked, and one was literally carried away in the arms of a police..... man just in time.

The Prince halted a moment, early in the drive, at the Cartier Moon- ment, which the King will unveil bý pressing a button at Balmoral.

An hour later the Prince stopped at the modest home of Mayor Martin, at Laval, a suburb of the city, where the Royal Arms were emblazoned, on the wooden front of the house. The villagers were congregated on the lawn, a local band played, and the school children sang "Canada.”

School children were everywhere- in white frocks; and in neat rows they lined the roadside in front of the school holding Union Jacks, with their teachers.

The seminaries and colleges had: atafis of pupils aligned on the dawn, and every convent saluted the Prince by Bying the Union: Jack and the Papal flag. He saw many hundreds of nuns clustered at the windows and: on the verandahs, and even beside. the roadway.. Montreal is, full of religious.commanities, and they made Bremarkably cordial contribution to This welcome reporte

More than one hundred represen-- tative men lunched, at the top of Mont Royal with the Prince, who sat between the mayor and Bishop' Bruchesi at the open side of the pavilion, with the city at his feet. At three o'clock, tired and dusty but
