The Governor of the Seychelles Islands, Ijoutengut-Colonel the Hon.. Sir Euston Fiennes, has presented two gigantia bad tortoise to the | Zoological Gardens. They have AT- rived safely by way of Ceylon, The smaller of the two weighs 110... the larger, which is not in quite so good condition, weighs only 10015. Tortoises, like fala and obeters, ouths to be heavy for their size. The present pair are examples of the North Allshi Island sortoise (Ten- tudo elephantine) which have been bred and reared at ibo, Government Botanic Station in the Boychelles." ["Mhough they are tine creatures, they are fun from being extrema specimens in size and weight.

Tortoises up to 3:10b, one comazon. and one weighing 700lb. has been recorded. They are, vegetable feed- ers. their chief foot in captivity being cabbage un fetice. They scoo learn to recognise their keeper and come transds him when he enters their

deure, rearing their long necks upwards and outwards to take food.

They are quite harmless, although their sharp-edged jaws seem yowerful enough to indict a serious wound..
