WELL-EARNED HONOUR.

SIR EDWARD RUSSELL'S PETRAGE,

At a conference representing the London and provincial Press, held at the offices of the Newspaper Proprie- tore Association, the following re solution was passed, or the motion. of Viscount Burnham, seconded by Sir George Riddell:

That this conference desires to re- cord its satisfaction at the honour conferred by his Majesty the King upon Sir Edward Russell, and to offer him its sincere congratulations. The conference also desires to express its admiration of Sir Edward Russell's. brilliant, distinguished, and unsullied a journalist and public career as man, and to express the hope that he may long continue to enjoy this. well-merited distinction.

Viscount Burnham said: Before we proceed to the business on the agenda, I desire to propose that we

·express our sincere and heartfelt con- gratulations to Sir Edward Russell on the honour that has been confer- red upon him. I doubt whether there is any member of our profes- sion who would have the same- enthusiastic approbation in these circumstances. I do not think there is a single man connected with the newspaper trade who does not feel that sterling merit and lifeservice have been fly rewarded by this Gazette. More than thirty years ago. I had the pleasure of serving with Sir Ed- ward Russell in the House of Com- mons. But, as we know, his heart was always in another place... He was first and teremest a journalist. and did not remain long in Parlia ment. Especially in regard to our trade charities he has played a most conspicuous part. He succeeded my father as treasurer of the Newspaper Press Fund, when my father became death of Lord president on the

Glenesk, and he has continued to hold that office during my presidency. He has always shown the keenest fcelir.g and fellow sympathy with the young journalist as with the old journalist with those rising) in their profession as with those who want provision for their declining days. He is a true friend and fellow- worker, and I am quite sure it will be ne empty form of words if we send him the hearty' congratulations of this body.

Sir George Riddell observed that no man in his profession deserves this distinction more than Sir Edward' Russell; there was no than more honcured and respected.

Mr. Heddie, speaking for the Nor thern newspapers, cordially supported the resolution..
