A LETTER FROM IRELAND.
Lieut. C. H. Welsman who was here in Hongkong with the 18th. Infantry and has since gone home to be demobilised writes out from Ireland where he is at present. The following is an extract from his letter and it will doubtless prove of interest. He writes:-
"I have get an appointment under the Ministry of Labour "Appoint ment Department" ...I suppose you have been enjoying the sticky heat of Hongkong while I have had a splendid holiday with beautiful weather, but after all I think taking it all round anyone with a decent job in Hongkong is much better off than being at home. The labour question is very serious, and without a doubt will be more so for they seem determined to throw this Government cut and get control themselves. The towns are full of men walking about and drawing the out of work donation and will not look for work as long as that is com ing in. The men who are at work will do no more than they can possibly help. Prices of all articles, of food, clothing, in fact everything are abnormally high and I am afraid will not come down again. Coal
£4-0-0, a ton, Boots 50/-, a suit of clothes £10-0-0, in fact all articles formerly 6d. now 1/6. I am afraid that the war has been fought in vain no matter what high principles were involved.
