STEEP ISLAND BACON..

A TYPHOON TALK.

Sailing from one coast port in Japan to another some two or three weeks ago was a familiar little junk of the type so often admired by Inland Sea voyagers. She had a: crew of nine, good Japanese and true,. and a cargo of cattle, ponies and pigs.. Space in this sailing craft was at a premítim, what with crew's quarters and standing room only for the menagerie, so little could be taken aboard in the way of water and stores. The voyage was short, however, and the pigs at any rate could go "dry for a day or two and be in the fashion.

But the junk's wireless must have been out of action, for no warning was received of the typhoon blowing up from the Guam hurricane factory. Caught in the open sea, they scudded along under bare poles hither and thither for a long seven days, with-, opt food and with little water and towards the end without hope. On the eighth day the wind fell and there loomed up to the southwest a beacon on the horizon. It was Steep Island Lighthouse at the mouth of the Yangtze. There is room to stand on the bottom step-leading up to the Tight, but little more, so it was with some difficulty that the ark decanted ita freight, or what was left of it, on the Jaland-nine sailormen and four-

teed pigs.

Again the heavens opened and the winds blew, carrying away their only means of escape--the junk, and for another long eight, days the adven- turers were marconed on the beacon; with starvation staring then in the
