BEAULIEU HOSPITAL.

LONG AGO.

Beaulieu Hospital could hold thirty or forty forlorn looking patients clothed in the white garb of the sickly.

They could sit on the verandahs..

the hospital wards, smoking cigarettes and enjoying the trimiswas, the shady trees, and the bright flowers of the hospital garden, which had been developed by a succession of enthusiastic M. Os. The garden was a good one, but its best feature to my eye was the hibiscus hedge, which hid it all from view,

But sometimes our hospital was overfull. The periodicity of the full phase puzzled me. It was so recurrent. It came with the rush of a landslide, and after the lapse of months or weeks as suddenly disappeared.

And a peculiarity of the full phase was that the patients never got. well. I do not suggest that the patients | died... No, they simply never got

well.

Our M. O. dosed them with drugs. and the very distastefulness of his | mixtures seemed sufficient guarantee of their curative power. But the more disgusting the stuff, the louder did the patients praise it. The bite terest pill they sucked and: chewed with complacency.

Long suffering employers came and waged a wordy warfare with them, but they drooped their chins, closed their eyes and stuck out their tongues so pathetically, that the em ployers left them at it and despaired.

I was strolling past the entrance and meditatively blew a curl of smoke from my cigar. I stood and watched the crowd of white garbed patients within..

Their faces were turned upwards to the skies, and I noted how a

sides. The efforts of the last.comers were comparable only to the lusts of an Alaskan gold rush.

Some patients tripped and fell.. Two of them were entangled with a third, and were bound into a sheaf by the unwound bandages of a' fourth. The unwieldy group span in an unknown orbit and gravitated to the central mass, where it founder- ed. The tumult gyrated with the shock, moving round and forward like a typhoon.

But a patient (bedridden for weeks) established a hold on the fruit and escaped with it. The crowd pur. sued him savagely, as a mob chases a welsher at Epsom on City and Suburban day. They cornered him, and the fight, which had raged pretty well all over the garden, at last was finished off at one end of the hibiscus hedge, through which our bedridden Champion tried to escape. while a fellow sufferer (symptoms of incipient paralysis) rained a fury of blows upon him. with a hospital dust-pan.

The storm abated.

The penetrating odours of carbolic and iodoform mingled with the stench of durian compelled me to retire, but as I went, I could see the sick, the lame and the lazy again taking up tactical positions at the durian boughs in anticipation of an immediate sortie.

Our hospital was always full in fruit time B. N. Borneo Herald.

"WORST MAN IN THE FLEET."

AN ANECDOTE OF THE KING ON E.M.S. THRUSH.

In the June issue of The Globe and Laurel, "An Old Royal Marine" gives some impressions of "Our Colonel-in- Chief," HM the King, and relates the following interesting anecdotes:" Whilst King George (then Lt, HRH. the Duke of York) was cotsmanding the gunboat "Thrush" on the North American Station, he was dining with. the admiral one evening. The: Ad- iniral incidentally mentioned, that he was certain he had the worst-man in the fleet in his flagship, and that he was at a loss to know how to deal with him, severe punishment having apparently had no good effect. Prince George said quietly, "Oh, send him to the Thrush," we'll tame him," The admiral, after demurring a little, consented, and the next day the had character was dismissed the flagship and was rewed to the." Thrush" with his bag. The prince was at the gang- way to receive him and said, "Now you have joined a jolly good ship so 'buck up." He asked the man if he had any money. The man had none, and the Prince gave him a couple of sovereigns, told him to take fou days' leave, and be prepared to tura over a new leaf at the expiration of the holiday. All this, being so un.. expected, set the man thinking, and, as he said afterwards," fairly put his pipe put," with the result that he improved in conduct" and in time. became a petty officer. The writer says he was afterwards "shipmates with the man in á “gobby.”
