THE MOTHER PAYS. At a small station, all live socially by taking in each other's washing. That is, everybody entertains every body else, and night after night one meets at dinner or dance the same people from whom one had parted an hour or so before. Monotonous, but inevitable.

And excellent feature of Indian life-there is little or no nobbery, no soul destroying struggle to keep everybody's income down to the up appearances."
