*MEM-SAHIB.

SIDELIGHTS ON ENGLISH WOMEN'S LIFE IN INDIA.

With the grave news from India many anxious thoughts turn to the English woman in the East, writes a #lady at home.

The mem-sabib may range in rank from the titled spouse of a lieutenant- governor of Indian Civil Commis sicner to brave, rough handed Ditah Shadd of the cantonments. But all are sisters under their skins.”

Flome folk cherish various illusions. concerning the mem-sahib. One is that she has no servant problem.""

This may have been true once, but is not so now, and has not been for a good few years. Here and there one may find a "treasure" of a butler or bearer capable, reliable, punctilious. that none shall rob you save himself, and then only according to well- understood usage. Also there are ayahs of the old school, wise, mother. ing, faithful, as some ayahs were. faithful unto death in the Mutiny.

The average Indian servant of to day however, has been spoiled by so-called education and the "spread of ideas." He is lazy, dishonest, apt to be impertinent to the verge of in- solence, and yearly becomes more ex- pensive, like everything else in India.

NOT ALWAYS SIMLA. Another idea dear to the home folk is that the memsahib's life is one continual round of galety, sport, and amusement. Certainly the girl who exchanges some quiet English parsonage or suburban home for an Indian bungalow is usually going to have a far *berter time" than she could ordinarily expect at home. But the gaiety may be a triffe forced, the laughter have the high-pitched note of those who live on the crust of an ever-smouldering, volcano.

Every Indian station is not a Simla.. The "long, long Indian day" may It is frequently an unmitigated Bole.

this very necessary exercise. One returna to breakfast, probably to find that the servants have not even begun their allotted, tasks, and one stands over them until the work is done.

During the morning one must be *prepared to receive callers. After- noon calls are not unknown in India, but the morning is the usual time for paying official or duty visits. Here let me describe one excellent Indian social institution. Should the memsahib be "not-at-home," a box, like a letter-box, is affixed to the gate-post. Into this the visitor drops his cards and departs, probably re- joicing. The newcomer to a station must at once call on everybody who is anybody. Thanks, however, to this system, he, trotting along on his pony and shooting his paste-boards Into the not-at-home" boxes, can get through fifty to sixty calls in a morning.

THE MOTHER PAYS. At a small station, all live socially by taking in each other's washing. That is, everybody entertains every body else, and night after night one meets at dinner or dance the same people from whom one had parted an hour or so before. Monotonous, but inevitable.

And excellent feature of Indian life-there is little or no nobbery, no soul destroying struggle to keep everybody's income down to the up appearances." Everybody knows last anna, and all entertaining is strictly according to scale. The wife of a penniless subaltern who launched out. In Mrs. Cominis. aloner" style would merely be laughed at, if no worse. This frankness greatly eases the mem-sabib's social burden.

But the mem-sahib may have to of children. She lives in an agony shoulder the very real and vital cross of apprehension when they are in India, in long-drawn out suspense when they are at home.

Whatever joys and pleasures and there are not a few-the mem-sahib may snatch from Indian life, she pays for them in full and brimming over when she becomes a mother.
