THE GLASGOW TRUNCHEON CHARGES

THE POLICE, -.
Evidence was continued in the trial in the Edinburgh High court of Emmanuel Shinwell, William Gallagher, and David Kirkwood, the Glasgow strike leaders, with nine of their associates, on charges con-
·nected with the Glasgow strike disorders of January last. The examination of the witnesses by counsel for the defence is directed to show that all through the strike the leaders endeavoured to emphasize the necessity for keeping order and for disproving the allegations that the strike was a Bolshevik, revolu tionary, or political movement rather than a purely industrial one.
Archibald Stewart, pattern-maker, said it was the use of their batons by the police which caused the dis turbance. The witness was struck on the head in the first police charge He was proceeding to have his wound dressed when another policeman made at him. The witness, how- ever, stopped him with the remark, "Dae ye no' think I've got enough?". (Laughter.)
Other witnesses who were injured in the truncheon charges gave evidence against the police. One said that the police had completely los: control of themselves, and their conduct was revented by the crowd. John Forrest, a moulder, said that he was batoned as he was endeavouring to pick up an old woman who had fallen. The witness gave the police no provocation and saw none given. The batons were used in a savage, brutal way.
James McLellan, a machineman, whose shoulder blade had been frac- tured by a blow, said that the police conducted themselves like a lot of savages.,
Andrew Henderson described the manner in which a policeman ill-used a small boy, and gave it as his opinion "" that the police, had gone muadz -
