DEARER CHINA TEA...

NEW TAXTHAT WOULD ONLY YIELD 289,000.

A persistent rumour is going the rounds of the tea market that it is in contemplation to increase the duty on China tea by 2d. per lb. In the coming Budget.

..

There seems to reason for such. a proceeding on the ground of rest venue. said an authority on the subject to a Daily Chronicle repre 'sentative on April 9. All the extra Camount which would come to the Exchequer as a result of the increase would not pay the unemployment allowances for a single day. The consumption of China tea. does not exceed 10,000,000lb. in the year, and the extra 2d. would bring in only N.£83,000. For this insignificant benefit

it hardly seems worth while to risk i our friendly relations with the Chi- nese being disturbed, and may pro- voke them to retaliate on Manches- ter Cottons."
