AUSTRALIAN FREIGHTS,

In reply to a quest on by Senator Pratten (N. S. W.) the Minister of Defence stated in the Australian Senate that the gross earrings of the motor ship Cethana on the first trip from San Francisco to Sydney amounted to £21,249 9,5. He stated that the contract price of the four wooden ships' that were being pur |chased was £425;615. "In the Senate the leader of the Opposition (Sebator Gardiner) asked whether all the ships that were purchased by the Labour Government in 1916 had been paid for, and whether it was a fact that they had been paid for chiefly “out of the earnings of the farmers, "by charging more than 4s a bushel on the freight that was less than 1s.- private ships carrying it in some cases at 64d., and in other cases at 104d. a 'bushel. He desired to know whether the Government would re- duce the freight by 2s, a bushel, and give the farmer the benefit of the reduction. The Minister of Defence, in reply, said his recollection of the freight on wheat was that the Aus tralian charges were cheaper than those of any country in the southern hemisphere. He deprecated the making of an attempt to induce the farmers of Australia to believe that they were not getting a fair deal from the Government. It had been ex- tremely difficult to get freight at any price, and it was a good thing for the

Because after the war a heavy passengers' traffic is to be expected Hollandward, so many colonial Dutch being forced to go home on account. of their health or for other important. reasons and as during five years there has been next to no occasion to travel, the Dutch shipping companies taised their rates and now ask for a first class berth Java- Holland gids. 1500, for a second: class ticket glds. 900, for a third: class one glds. 600.

went

This has caused a big commotion. amongst the Dutch Indian public which has aired its opinion in the

papers newspapers. Some even so far as to call the attention of foreign steamship companies to this question, a comparison with the rates of the biggest companies having shown that they are much lower than the rates of the Durch lines.

It appears that the rates of the Dutch companies have been raised. by nearly 100 per cent. since the last war-time prices were fixed, while the. rate asked by the Govenment för passages on two chartered mail-boats which sailed recently were more reasonable.

It is to be expected that the foreign. companies will carry a lot of Hol landers for months to come if the Dutch lines do not revise their rates. Up to now there is no news to hand of foreign steamers being especially put on the Java-Holland run and so spare Dutch passengers the trouble of going to Singapore first. Of course it ought to be regretted if it came to such a thing, but it would only show that the Dutch public saw the truth of that slogan of the Dutch companies 30 often heard during war-time: that shipping is commerce after all and nothing more "mean-
