-TWO DESTRUCTIVE. BLOCKHOUSES.
Maurepas is less than two miles south east of Combles. The position which the battalion was ordered to occupy was 200 or 300 yarda north-east of the village, When the order for the fcal attack was given the French; occupied a position among the beans and masonry of the ruined houses within about 100 yards of | two ́extemporized blockhouses, which were strongly held by the enemy with achine gun. The whole of that part of the village had been destroyed by the artillery fre of both sides; a parallelogram burely 60 yards behind the position to which the French retired during an extra.
artillery, firing by the map, were for ong time shelling an area in which though uncomfortably lose, there were no French soldiers to be killed.
A month later on the same regiment, holding always. the position nexi to the British. joined lands with them on the day, when the encirclement of Combles was finally completed. Multiply the story of what they did as. Maurepas by about fifty, and you got a view of one part of the French advance north and south of the Somme..
