INTENSE BOMBARDMENT,
LONDON, Sept. 20. A telogmm from Paris states that there has been a contintions bombardment, with great intensity, and it is w intermingled with lively fusilades and madhine-gun fire. A communique states that the Germons are showing special activity in Arms and Champagne. but French hoovy guns in Champagne, silenced the fromaan howitzers. The French batteries of various points hamporel the Genuin supply arninge munts. They blew up an urentiation, store at Perthes, and woro niso 'particularly destructive on the enemy's works ut Lorraine.
Sept. 21.
A Paris communique statey that our batteries in Artois continually bethanfod the German defences. The enemy artilkry was again most antive, and threw heavy shells on the suburbs of Arras. There was severe ahrenading in Champagne, on the heights of the Mouse, and in the Vosges, but the artillery duel has slackened between the Aisne and

CRITICAL SITUATION IN BULGARIA.
WHAT DOES IT PORTEND"
LONDON, Sept 12 Owing to the strict censorship throughout Bulgaria, where partial law has been enforced, it in dificult accurately to gauge the present critical posi tion there, but despatches to Home from Buktarest indicate that the deputa tion from the Opposition Parties, which waited on King Ferdinand, was weightier than can be gathered from the bald Sofia telegrams. It is stated that these groups, which favour arrangements with the Entente Powers, have been reinforced by the bulk of the Stambulofista under M. Ghendadieff, thus constituting a majority in the Chamber. Hence King Ferdinand's lengthy audience and aaurance that he would take a decision on the subject of Bal- garia'a attitude without consulting Parliament.
The Government have summoned a meeting of the Ministerialist de peties to consult there on the situation. There were great patriotic do- monstrations in Sofian and throughout the country on Sunday the an-
ivecary of Bulgarian unity--at which the military was very prominent.
THE LATEST GERMAN WAR LOAN.
A Poor Response.
Tasos, Sept. 20,
"
The third German War Lin closes on Wednesday, The Cologne Gazette, in a last despairing appeal for subscriptions, com. plains that there are 20,000,000 male adult salary and wage-earners, of whom at least ten millions are able to spare a 100 or 200 marks, yet only 2,690,000 subscribed to the last loan. It asks where are the remaining waven millions, and exhorts Germans to show to the world that the reports that Gerninay is Sinnucially exhausted is untrue.
During the last fortnight there has been a large increase in the number of State Governments and Local Governments offering employpes avances, to be deducted from their salaries, to enable them to subscribe.

Lesbos, Sept. 20. Moscow Days," as they are called here, have begun, saya a irom Petrograd. Men of all classes, provincial and municipal authorities, and politicians assembled in the ancient capital where namerona conferences and cougrasses are being held, linked by the single purpose of the unity of the country for the inflexible prosecution of the war.

Overall is the great personality of M. Chelaokoff, Mayor of Moscow, whe porsenes public confidence to a remarkable degree and halde niso the affec tion of the working classes,
A deputation of the leaders of the varione congresses met at the Mayor's otice and passed a resolution afirming the urgency of the reassembling of the Duma and the formation of a National Ministry, while the congress of Octo- briste, sa the Monarchical party, addressed themselves to the Tsar to this end. nad denounced as traitors any who were trying to sow even the smallest seed of internal trouble.

ON THE EASTERN FRONT.
FIGHTING SOUTH OF RIGA.
LONDON, Sept. 21. To-day's Patrograd communiqus admits that in the Vilna district, the Rus sians, after fights for the fords of the Vilia river, retired somewhat eastward.
Fighting continues for the possession of many other fords.
The communite says: Everywhere the counter-attacks of the Russians. were clamictertised by the utmost coolness and assurance under the most trying conditions.
There has been a recrudescence of sharp fighting south of Riga, where the enemy's artillery fire is more severe than formerly.
The Russians blew up a bridge which the Germans were trying to throw across the river An, north-west of Mitau.
There has also been desperate fighting in the lake district south-west of Dvinsk, where the Russians accred successes, at one point recapturing their formiar trenches where numerous enemy rifkrand manoitions were found."
“AUSTRIANS” SEVERELY-PUNISHED.
Russian bayonet attacks nod cavalry charges severely punished the Austrians north of Luzk, where over 700 prisoners and a large supply column with field kitchens was captured, while scores of Austrians were sabred in a throw-mila Cavalry pursuit.
TERRIFIC BATTLE RAGING.
LONDON, Sept 21.
The 'race' correspondent at Dvinsk, writing on the 18th inst, suya that he has spent the past three days on this front, where a terrife battle is raging with little interruption. When the attacks ense at one place they instantly hegin at another. The rest front is only twelve miles from the town, whose deserted streets rescund with the detonations of heavy gun-fire, The Russians. in trenches three desp, have hitherto repulsed constant and fierce attacks, though the Germans were twice and three times as numerous, with an enormous superiority in guns. With such defences the capture the town will represent heavy sacrifices by the Gerts who, according to prisoners, are desperately depressed despite their advances. They state that they have been deceived, as they were promised that the capture of Warsaw would mean the end of the Russian campaign.
The Germo's losses are undoubtedly double these of the Russians, who are ghting with undiminished stubbornness and are in nowise pessimistic. With the winter approaching and no important objective is obtainable before the change of season, four is growing in the hearts of the enemy as to the result of the Russian vaninre.
