THE CONTROVERSY REGARDING CONSCRIPTION.
....
Juspos, Sept. 16. The Conscriptionist Press hails the speeches of Lord Kitchener and Mr. Asquith as indicating that compulsion is coming nearer,
The Labby correspoĥulent of the Daily News says that some Liberal MLP's deduced from them that Lord Kitchener was deciding in favour of conscription, and colds that, they are wrong and that the pro-Conscrip tionist Cabinet Ministers are rather disappointed at the pronouncement. in which Lord Kitchener remains unconmitted.
The teenuse iu recruiting is due for the fact that Lord Lansdowne's. National Register Committee advised the War Ofice that a large in her of industries must not be further depleted by enlistments. More over, the War Offico itself relaxed the recruiting till it was able to apply the registration results. Also the harvest has kept men busy in the Country.
The Daily Chronicle says the general hiprussion in the Lobby is that Mr. Asquith's speech is left the door ajar for compulsions, and bus certainly not “barred mal Faftol" the door against i

Fle went on to say that the Minister of Munitions had established twenty shell factories, and seventeen wero in course of construction, while there were 715 controlled establishments which employed 800,000 work- men. All that was now needed was an adequate supply of labour, and in this field none were better fitted to help than wonen.
THE MILITARY POSITION IN THE WEST AND EAST.
The military position in the West Ind been everywhere strengthened. We had not been successful in driving the Turks from the crests of Callı: poli, but our gain of ground. there was most substantial. No words of admiration were too strong for the gallantry of the troops.
The German superiority in the East had only been in artillery The Russian retreat had been masterly. The army was still unbroken ut the close of autumn, and the German objective was far out of reach. That the Tsar had taken command was a most significant proof of the unalterible determination of the Russian people, from the highest to the lowost. (Cheers.)
