RUSSIA'S POSITION UNBROKEN IN STRENGTH,

OPINIONS OF EXPERTS.

LONDON, August 15.

A telegram from Fetrograd states that experts dozcribe the general posi- tion on the eastern frontier of the Russians sa haing unbroken in strength. It la now fifty miles behind the Warenw Jine, running roachly from Lomza to Vlodava, with a convex face towards the enemy and steadily fattening back- wards. The progress of the fighting indicates that both wings hold stubbornly tilt the main forces in the centre are reached at appointed positions. The German northern armies on the Narew are eighty miles to the south, and

German objective. The Germans continue to make desperats attacks on the wings, leaving the centre almost unmolested. The Russiana are. keeping, a firer bold on the railway lines.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS ON THE EASTERN FRONT.

A new battle is developing in the Baltic Provinces, but the situa- tion around Rigu is undangel.

You Hindenberg's armies in the Dvinske region are, however, making a grout effort to check the Russian offensive?

The Thassians again requilsed four German attacks on the western positions Korno.

The for artillery duet has been incessant. The Germans clain that they took a fortified forest near Korno; but as they only claje to have taken 360 prisoners, “is ramot have beva much of a success,

The Germans alse claim to have stored an advance position to the worth of Savogeorgievsk which the. Busshin communique refers to as akiri.**

Prince Leopold's'amics, creeping nearer the Bug, are meeting with obstinate prsistance around Sedietz and Lukow.

The Russians are taking up the Brestlitovsk positions unimpeded and are covered by strong reargnorila,

FURIOUS BATTLE ON THE CADORE FRONTIER.

HEATY LOSSES INFLICTED ON THE AUSTRIANS.

Toyoos, Aug. 15, 3.3 7.01.

A telegram frora Rome states that there has been a furious battle the Cadom frontier. The enemy in the Montepiana zone concen- rated his batteries and attempted to attack in force to regain lost ground. Evantully, after a most violent struggle, the enemy wits driven hock with hruvy losses.

GERMAN SIEGE OF KOVNO.

The Garmans are apparently settling down to the siege of Korno. They ace forcing crowds of Polas and Letts to construct sloga linse, a platform for heavy guns on the Nioman ten miles distant, and a fortress. These pressed workmen frequently escape to the Russian lines, they state that soms der. Iman howitzers have been in position for a month.

A statement iaquedi at Petrograd aaya that satisfactory progress has been

made on the Liga, Niemen, Drinsk and other fronts. This may regarded as

the first result of the mobilisation of industry, Though the arream of muni- tions has only begun the army appreciates the energy of the country, and the spirits of the troops have been raised.accordingly.

A The most splendid of the army's successes recently was the expulsion" of the enemy from Flodava, the captors of which endangered the position of three-fourths of the Russian troops between the Vistula and the Bug.

"ONE OF THE MOST GLORIOUS EPISODES OF THE WAR."

Unolicial accounts of the Vlodava affair state that General von Mucken. sen's advance thither was marked by the most sanguinary fighting. He had hitherto almost succeeded in cutting off the retrons of very large forces, Ocly the promptness of Generi Alexief in rushing up all available reinforcements saved a disaster. (Ela ordered his Army on the Bug to fight as it had never. fought before, for Vlodaya must be retaken. They obeyed magnificsatly, and in three days pushed-back the enemy twenty miles. They are now holding him upon a little stream not far north of Cholm. This irresistible wave of Rug- sian bravery must be ́accounted one of the most glorious episodes of the war.
