THE SINGAPORE MUTINY.

STATEMENT IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS.

LONDON, July 22,

Ta the Blouse of Commons, in tha course of the Colonial Ofica debate, Mr. Gerabot Stewart raised the question of the Singapore mutiny and declared 25that the indications pointed to Germsa fintrigue. He complained that the Colonial Office had concealed the facts, wishing to escape responsibility.

Sir John Rees enquired whether the Ceylon rioting was likewise traceable to the Germans.

Mr. Steel Maitland, Under Secretary of State for the Colonies, in replying. said that German intrigue might have been at the bottom of the Ceylon dis turbances, but the situation there was completely controlled. He heartily con- curred in the praise for the promptitude of the British at Singapore, and assured 40,99 the House that the Government' was | mindful of the brave deeds of those in | Singapore and in the other Colonies. He was of opinion that the Governor took adequate steps to contral German expenditure of money. The Colonia? Office, Le' added, did not desire to conceal anything regarding the Sing- sporematiny,

The urgency of the work for the bavy has made it impossible for shipbuilders in many enses to devote any attention what ever to mercantile work, although ahipowners are specially anxious not nly to secure delivery of the vessels nlready under construction, but to place orders for farther tonnage, in view of the large amount of shipping withdrawn from the overses carrying trade for war service, and the resultant high freight rates obtainable. Prices quoted for new tonnage have had to be greatly increased, not only because of the large advance in the cost of material, but also increases in wages.
