REPORT BY SIR JOHN FRENCH.
Loxos, May 1. 9.30 p.m. Field Marshal French, in his report on the Germans using poisons gases, states that the guises had been ejectual by pips laid in the trenches And also fg shells specially manufactured. The German attacking troops had specially designed respirators. This, all points to a long methodicat preparation on a large senie. He emphasises that a week before Germany used, this method, a Berlin communique announced that the British.were using aspbesinting gases. Then there appeared no mesen for this. astounding falsehood, but it is obvious that it was part of schetne. It. shows that the Geraris recognised the illegality of the method and were anxies to forestall ueutal and domestic criticisti. Moreover, since the method was first used, the enemy adopted both in offence and -dofeng winever the wil was favourable,
• The oflect was not merely disabling or even painlessly fatal as aug gosted in the German Press, but the victims suffered neutely and a large) proportion died a painful and lingering death It appears that those surviving are permanently injured in the"fungs and may possibly be invalids for life. These effects must imve been known to Germa scientists, who devised the method and the military authorities, who? sanctioned there use. I am of opinion that the enemy definitely decided to use flue guns as a homin) proslibure and protests will therefore be
useless.
