there are 123 and of the latter 84. Naxt
in order numerically are those who have entered the Civil, Diploziatie, or Consular Services in various parts of the Empire, in the United States, and in Germany, of whom, grouped together, there are 32. Of the others included in the list 20 bave given themselves to religious work, 15 to medicine, 14 to business, eight to min- ing and engineering, and five each to journalism, agriculture, and forestry.
The question naturally occurs whether, thus distributed in their own countries, the returned scholars are likely to liare a fair fold for exercising the influence which Rhodes wished them to bavo. An

The statistics given illustrate the wide scope of the Rhodes bequest. Altogether
180 scholars were in residone during the academic year, while six had temporary leave of absence. Among these 188 scho tars were representatives of all the Pro. vinces or States of the Dominions, ofs several smaller colonies, ef every State in the American Union, and of different sections of the Gorman Empire. They are distributed protty equally among all the colleges. Whatever else the Rhodes Scholarships may accomplish, they must ovidently lead to a lively intershange of thought and experience in the University. ( home studente do not draw some kroadening influence from this intercourse as well as the scholars, it is propably their own fault...
